‘Divorce ceremonies’ on the rise in Japan

Japan is seeing a rise in ‘Divorce Ceremonies’ as couples reasses their lives following the massively destructive earthquake that occured in March of this year. The ceremonies are seen as a way to amicably end the relationship and have friends and family witness the couples final moment. One former salesman has seen a market opportunity:

Hiroki Terai, 31, has divorced a total of 79 couples so far, telling them to smash their wedding rings with a hammer and encouraging family and friends to attend, ABS-CBN reports.

“I don’t think the concept of divorce is a negative thing,” he said. “Instead of spending a lifetime bickering, it is much better to wrap up the relationship and restart separately.

“Even since childhood, I was always curious why people don’t hold divorce ceremonies, even though they have wedding ceremonies.”(DigitalSpy)

In the US ‘Divorce Ceremonies’ have been around for a while and many churches have prayers specifically for such an event. It is seen as a way of finding closure and moving forward after a difficult decision.
